Slug BootCamp - Saturday 19th of May, 2007

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Hey guys! Just thought I’d do a quick shout out and remind people that tomorrow is SLUG’s first BootCamp.

BootCamp is not a geek fest - BootCamp aims to help people (not geeks!) get into using Linux.

So if your reading this and want to see what Linux can do for you - come along :)

HP has been kind enough to sponsor the event with approximately 30 linux demo machines (with sexy 30 inch widescreen monitors) and a wonderful venue at HP campus (410 Concord Rd, Rhodes, Sydney - map).

You can find out more on what’s on by checking out the schedule for the day.

Day Starts at 10am and finishes at 6pm - People from all over welcome :)

Developing Applications for Symbol DOS-based barcode scanners

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Anyone had any experience developing DOS applications for the Symbol brand of barcode scanners? I have a friend who runs an Apple Store wanting me to write some custom applications for it.

DOS was a bit before my time - so a better question would be “what can I use to develop applications for DOS?”

“Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith and licensing chief Horacio Gutierrez sat down with Fortune recently to map out their strategy for getting FOSS users to pay royalties. Revealing the precise figure for the first time, they state that FOSS infringes on no fewer than 235 Microsoft patents.”

If FOSS is infringing on so many patents, Microsoft, I think it’s time that you should cough up some evidence.

4GB of RAM, Hiberfil.sys and Windows Vista

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

If you use Windows, you may of noticed a large hiberfil.sys folder in your system root (Say, C:\) this is the hibernation file that Windows uses to store the contents of ram when you hibernate your system.

Before Vista, if you wanted to free up some space, you could simply just turn off hibernation and delete the file.

Unfortunately Windows Vista likes to keep it around even with hibernation turned off in the Power Management settings. In my case a 4GB file. It’s undeleteable and who know’s why simply having hibernation off would still require you to keep the file.

To get rid of it run your command prompt (cmd.exe) as Administrator then type:

powercfg -h off

No, your message offered that he can come begging, because that is the
best that thieves may do.

Come little dog, come beg for forgiveness.

You are a very poor example of humankind.

Yet another Mardi Gras and the Flashback.

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Well, Mardi Gras was an awful time for me last year and this year I wanted it to be a better one - one with the improved me and the improved life direction.

Excuse me, but I’m not entirely good with expressing these kinds of things with the written word.

I dissapointed some people I love and care about over the weekend. Who saw a dark side of me that I never wanted to surface again.
I think some changes to my company and some more thought into my actions will be needed again in the coming year.

Self improvement is full time work. It never stops.

With each relapse comes as a wake up call: Is this really the way I want people to see me behave? Do I want people to think of me any less? Do I want to lose peoples respect? No.

That person, “Jimmy”, is a dead end. I must change and I must grow.

Forcing Mono applications to bind to different assembly versions

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

publicKeyToken="1b03e6acf1164f73"
culture="en-us" />
newVersion="0.85.1.271"/>

For all you Mono and .NET hackers out there - Stick this in your App.config and replace the assembly name, culture and versions and it allows you to force a version redirect on the assembly.

This is really useful when you have libraries or applications that depend on another assembly version that is binary compatable with the later.
