Opensource in the work place.

Friday, December 30th, 2005

It seems like my boss is now warming up to opensource software - he sent an email to the dev team (70 or so people) today asking if we should roll out a licence of WinRAR on our companies SOE (Standard Operating Enviroment). I replied, no, 7-Zip does all that we need and told him a bit about it

He wrote back:

I like it – free and
with source – hits all the buttons

It is a just a compression utility, but it easly saved us a few thousand in licencing.

Microsoft To Buy Opera?: Shutup John C. Dvorak

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

patro writes “Should MS beef up cranky old Internet Explorer for today’s standards? Dvorak thinks buying Opera would be a smarter move. It works on all the major platforms including the Mac which IE won’t support anymore and $400 million for it is pocket money for Microsoft.”

Slashdot | Dvorak Says MS Should Buy Opera

Seriously - this guy has not forcasted anything that has happened so far. John C. Dvorak, you are a hopeless Hack. I hope you read this. Your journalism is trash and your comments on the IT industry are ill-informed and stupid.

Why people are still reporting his articles is beyond me.

Kill Bills Browser

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

5. If we knew web designers would hurl themselves off it, we wouldn’t have put the Golden Gate bridge so close to San Francisco.Every year, hundreds of web designers take their own lives rather than continue the hopeless struggle of making their websites IE compatible. Is that what you really want?? Dead web designers????? Cause that’s what you’re going to get!!!!!! See if I care!!!!!!!!!!

Kill Bill’s Browser - Switch to Firefox

This is the most excellent list of reasons to use Firefox.

Sydney Race Riots: I’m getting the hell out of here

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

I live at Maroubra Beach: Im getting the proverbial hell out of here. I watched the riot on Sunday night - it was bad. Worse than the media reported - I watched the local Bra Boys fight the Lebanese from the corner of my street - expect a full post soon.

Last night there were more riots and I’ve decided to packup my personal things and live with my parents at Dee Why for a couple of days and this weekend I’m finding someplace else to live. You work a 9 to 5 job in a Dilbert style company and come home to something that is akin to something out of Shakespears “Romeo and Juliet”. Screw this.

Today in all its glory

Posts of Quality

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

I’ve been thinking it out the content and quality of my blog recently and have decided i’m going to get an “angry young man” blog at Live Journal (after all thats what its for) and leave this blog for quality technical stuff. That means no stories about hookers, smacked up queens or how much I hate a particular transexual this week.

Also, sorry to say, most of my gay “friends” are bitter, bitter people.

Just a note

Thursday, December 1st, 2005

The Windows forms designer in Visual Studio 2002, can be at times, worse than Glade2. It eats controls and has poor Redo/Undo functionality. Microsoft you do it again, everytime.

Sorry, the party is over.

I’d just like to say, that Open Sourceis a developer phenomenon and cannot stand up to the customer experience ofWindows Live.

Can I get this message every time Windows Crashes?
