The Hackery

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

Well, for this weekends hackery, I want to build a FileRoller clone in GTK#. Its a relatively small application in both use and code (alot of its code could be replaced with .NET’s existing frameworks, anyway). I guess I could steal the Glade files from the existing source and work from there.

Instead of using the common unix CLI utilities to create, append and open the files, SharpZipLib could be a viable replacement. Although, instead of using SharpZipLib directly, I could expose a loadable module interface so that other developers may write their own plugins for archival compression.

Also, I must note, that I have realised how many planets I am subscribed to and realise also that many people don’t feel comfortable with my gayboy ramblings (re: last post and some of my older ones). I’m going to hack WP at some stage so I can seperate RSS feeds by catagory (so planeters, you will get my technobabble. always.).

Also, Jeff and Pip, Its about time you two got hitched. Have a fab wedding!!

I can’t wait for the weekend to begin…

Wednesday, April 6th, 2005

Well its almost time for the weekend. I get to a thursday and try to have definate plans for what I’m hoping todo - Queer Prom on friday, clubbing on saturday and some hacking in the inbetween bits.

Yesterday, I went to the doctor to checkout this sickness I have - turns out its not Tonsillitis (which I seem to get every few months) and its just a common cold (yay for being able to eat and talk). I also did my regular blood testing, which is always a good idea if your a young gay man. They took three viles of blood from me and I felt quite lightheaded, so my mate gave me a lift home, which was a good idea because there is a massive incline of a hill near my house and its quite a cardiovascular excerise walking up it.

Sick

Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

Im totally sick at the moment and at work, trying to pushout some C# code like a 9 month pregnant woman. Its some kinda throat infection and its pretty damn sore. Sorry to hear about your problems with some developers Auxesis, they kind of remind me with some Gentoo developers I worked with. Anyway, seems BreakMyGentoo.Net has problems managing their project - its practically dead. For the way I was treated by a certain person, thank god its over.

I’m Not the only one

People have seem to be fucked by Intercosmos all over the Web

These people are profiteering pigs and deserve the flack that they get from the rest of us who want to use the web without hassle.

The Lowdown

Monday, April 4th, 2005

So whats been happening with me? Not much… I’ve been trying to get the Mono 1.1 runtime happening on my Ubuntu box (without gaving to sit down and learn dpkg… lazy). This means I can start writing some GTK# 2.0 Applications. I want to start replacing some of my “I use everyday” applications with some managed alternatives - which leads me into my research area for the next few months - how to develop CIL applications quickly for GNOME by developing frameworks for common application tasks. If you rock on down to Dot Net Rocks blogcast stuff, you will read and hear alot about Application Frameworks and the kind of skills you need to design them.

I also helped out a mate by totally pimping his resume at my place of employment. Hopefully all of the above works out awesome.

Its a gaybar!

Last wednsday I left work a little early to get some retail therapy (Im a simple, expensive and really gay creature) to get my spirits up (one of my fav shirts got distroyed, thanks to the boyfriend) and I needed something to read/todo on the bus (besides BlogCasts). So I rocked up to Angus and Robinson in Pt Street mall to go buy a pretty new tech related book, when I stumbled across Mono: A Developers Notebook. It totally rocks! It covers the installation of the Mono 1.0 series, GTK# 1.0, introduction to the framework and some C# language features. I basically knew pretty much what was in the book (except for the GTK#, mind).

But I have to support people like Edd at Mono who have done some awesome work it getting things to happen and buying the book was my way of doing this. Also, thanks to Thom at Ubuntu, I have mono running on my Ubuntu Hoary/PPC macmini.

So what else is up? Well, I have a new boyfriend, Daniel, who is a Medic in the Aust. Navy. We have been together for about a month and we have just been going out clubbing and enjoying eachothers company.

Work: Increased responsibility. I was moved into a new “Team” called “Upgrade Assurance”, which is basically doing all the customised bits on our software for clients. Its a pretty important part of our software as it is mostly b2b data interfaces. I used to be that guy who always needed his hand held in development but now I hold peoples hands. Its great, although I get interupted all the damn time.

Im totally enjoying my new wordpress blog - its going to make me blog more often now as I don’t have to “blog around” the bugs I have not fixed in KBlog. The Guys At Kruel are changing heaps of things to focus on the new goals: Open Source Game Development. Check out what they are doing, they need your love and support.
